First ladies, odd 17th century Frenchmen, and quirky old transportation modes still in use are just a few topics mentioned as we preview Altered Mobility, a podcast about the history of public spaces and publicly available transportation.

Hi, this is not quite the podcast.

It's actually a trailer for a new
podcast, Altered Mobility with me,

your host, Sheryl Gross-Glaser.

And what is Altered Mobility about
and who am I and what can you expect?

And I don't even believe in
trailers cuz you might as well

just listen to an episode.

Find out what it's about, but that's okay.

Because I realize some people
want something much shorter

before they actually dive in.

What is Altered mobility?

Altered mobility is a podcast
about the history of public

transportation, publicly available
transportation and public spaces.

Why do a podcast, cuz it's a fun topic.

It's interesting.

And there is so much history here.

So why not share?

It enables me to do a term paper every
couple of weeks on a certain topic

and share it with you and who the
heck am I to know anything about this?

So my first career was
in criminal defense.

I was an appellate advocate.

And my second career was in
transportation and I saw more and more

the intersection with public spaces
and how little people knew about this.

And I think approaching these topics from
a historical perspective gives not only

perspective, but, it's really intriguing,
intriguing how all these things have

developed and what topics, oh my God.

There's so many.

And I'm gonna talk to you about episodes
we've done that we're gonna put in

the hopper and episodes coming up and
maybe possible seasons with a theme.

So we have such topics as an
early urban retrofit, the walls of

Lucca, Blaze Pascal, and the first
bus system omnibus, I should say.

And they weren't buses with wheels.

They were buses with
horses, poetry on transit.

First ladies, how can youdo any history
podcast without looking at Jackie Kennedy?

And in this case, we'll look also at
Ladybird Johnson, London underground,

we could do a whole season on Frederick
Law Olmsted, poetry on transit, the

American college campus as public space,
pocket parks, open streets, complete

streets, the history of accessibility
and the Americans with disabilities act.

People with disabilities, the Morgantown
personal rapid transit system, bus

rapid transit, Stonehenge as gathering
place, planning and zoning topics.

I mean, you can see there's
just a ton to dive into.

So, so much to go into,
and at this point, really.

You know, as much as you're gonna know
if you're going to listen to an episode.

So listen to an episode it's better.

They're well researched and I hope fun.

So if you have time while you are doing
things like doing dishes, taking a

shower, walking, driving, having a Manny
petty, pretending to work or trying.

Sleep.

I'm sure that we are a cure for
insomnia for somebody out there.

So whatever it is, can't wait
to meet you and get this going.

It's been a long time in the making.

See you soon.

You
